“You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat.”
- Isaiah 25:4
In troubled times, we seek refuge – an escape from the world that’s crashing down around us, a sanctuary from our sufferings, a haven of strength and healing. And for millions of men, women, and children throughout the country, that refuge is The Salvation Army.
Altogether, The Salvation Army served more than 30 million Americans in 2012, all thanks to the generosity of our donors.
Across the country, The Salvation Army was a Refuge of Comfort for homeless families, a Refuge of Encouragement for students in after-school programs, a Refuge of Renewal for those in the grip of addiction, and a Refuge of Love for inner-city youth experiencing the joys of summer camp for the first time.
The needs this year were just as numerous and diverse as the people served. But The Salvation Army is unique in that it meets people right where they are, helping them overcome their specific hardships.
Join Operation: Gimme Shelter
to Provide Shelter to Tampa Homeless through Holiday Season
The Tampa Police Department and Downtown Partnership are leading the charge in the fight against homelessness this holiday season.
On November 27th, 2013, Chief Jane Castor, on behalf of TPD, and the Downtown Partnership called a press conference to challenge Downtown Tampa businesses to donate money to The Salvation Army of Hillsborough County to help homeless have a place to stay during the holidays.
Operation: Gimme Shelter will run from November 27th through December 31st. Every $10 donation will provide secure housing for a night, a shower, and two meals for someone living on Tampa's streets. With the many cold nights to come, $10 can make a real difference in a homeless person's life this holiday season.
The Tampa Police Department kicked off Operation: Gimme Shelter with a $2,000 donation to a special fund within The Salvation Army specifically designated to provide shelter for the homeless. The Tampa Downtown Partnership is taking a lead role in the operation, contributing $1,000 and reaching out to their membership to build more support in helping Tampa's Homeless.
The Sunset Musical Festival donated the $2,000 to TPD for this cause.
To donate to Operation: Gimme Shelter, please visit www.salvationarmytampa.org or mail a check to PO Box 2839, Tampa, FL 33601. Please write “Operation: Gimme Shelter” in the memo line. Credit card donations designated to Operation: Gimme Shelter can also be made via phone at 813-228-7616.
